kowtow

What is the english transalation for 'kowtow'.....my niece enquired .....it is a chinese word meaning bow to someone by touching your head on ground . But she wanted exact english word....i told....grovel or knock head as literal transalation.....but she wasn't sure I was correct ....she will chk today & let me know.
